Genus - Phocoena (Dall's & Harbour Porpoise)
We have two common species; Dall's and Harbour's. We also occasionally see the Hybrid species which is created when the two species breed with one another. Porpoise are quite similar to dolphins. The three key distinguishing factors are the lack of an elongated snout, spade shaped teeth instead of conically shaped and the smaller body size. The word "porpoise" in Latin translates into pigfish due to the shape of the animals head and it's stocky stature.
Just a five minute boat ride from our dock is the world's largest concentration of porpoise per area then anywhere on the planet. The deep valley, over 300m in some areas, called Boundary Pass separates the Gulf Islands to the north and the San Juan Islands to the south. Here the strong currents create upwellings that the small cetaceans capitalize on, feeding on the abundant bait fish and squid in the area.
Dall's porpoise like other similar species will interact with boats and ships by bow riding on the pressure wake the boat creates when moving through the water. It is such a thrill to see these speedy creatures flying underwater side to side just inches from the hull. |
