Dall & Harbour Porpoise
Within 5 minutes from our dock is Boundary Pass, the largest concentration of porpoise in the world. We have two common species: Dall's and Harbours. Occasionally they inter-breed and create a sub species called Hybrid. The Dall's species are considered to be the fastest moving cetacean in the world, travelling up to 65 km/hr. Like dolphin, the Dall's species love to ride the wake the bow creates when moving through the water creating an amazing experience for guests onboard.
Porpoise are similar to dolphins with three distinct different characteristics. Instead of having conically shaped teeth like dolphin, they have spade shape teeth because they feed on mainly on squid and laternfish. The elongated snout that is common amongst dolphin is not apparent with porpoise. The word porpoise in latin means "pigfish" because they look like they swam into a concrete wall really fast face first! Size, they are considerably smaller in length then the traditional dolphin.
